Board Members

Jane Silverman, Chairman

Ms. Silverman is an organizational consultant focusing on the nonprofit community. She is formerly the executive director of the Association of Junior Leagues International. She is a non-resident Fellow and member of the advisory committee for the Center for Civil Society of the School of Public Policy and Social Research at UCLA. Each spring she teaches a popular workshop on nonprofit management and consulting at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Ms. Silverman has served on the boards of Young Audiences of New Jersey, the Opera Festival of New Jersey, and the Princeton Area Community Foundation (PACF). She is a past president of the Corner House Foundation and the Princeton Youth Fund. In addition, she currently serves on the boards of Planned Parenthood of the Mercer Area, the Jewish Community Foundation of Mercer Bucks, and the advisory committee of the Fund for Women and Girls at PACF. She is also a national officer of the American Jewish Committee and was awarded its national leadership award in 2003. Ms. Silverman is a former trustee of Radcliffe College, her alma mater, and has a master’s degree in city planning from the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently chairperson of the Foundation’s Nominating Committee.

Els N. Paine, Vice-Chair

Ms. Paine graduated from Princeton University with a degree in molecular biology and earned an MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. She has a professional background in market research in the pharmaceutical industry, having worked for Merck & Co., McNeil Pharmaceutical and Bain & Company. She is currently employed at Rosetta, an interactive advertising agency. Ms. Paine, lives in Princeton with her husband Peter and their three children. She has been active in the community Stuart Country Day School, Stony Brook Garden Club, Trinity Church and The Princeton Girlchoir..

Tobin V. Levy, Treasurer

Mr. Levy is currently the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for LISC (Local Initiatives Service Corporation, www.lisc.org) in New York.  Prior to accepting that position, Mr. Levy was Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer for Hedge Fund Strategies at Goldman Sachs and Co. In this capacity, Mr. Levy oversaw treasury, risk, controller, fund administration, legal, compliance and foreign exchange trading. Prior to the CFO position, Mr. Levy served as Chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs Bank USA, a $20 billion subsidiary of Goldman Sachs. Mr. Levy has been a 25 year resident of Princeton and has served as a Trustee for the Princeton Day School, the Junior Achievement of Central New Jersey 2002-2006 as well as All Kinds of Minds. In June 2008 Mr. Levy completed the New Pathways To Teaching in New Jersey.

Leslie Burger, Library Director and Secretary

Ms. Burger has been director of the Princeton Public Library since 1999. In addition, she serves as the secretary for the Library Board of Trustees and also for the Library Foundation Board of Directors. Prior to joining the Library, Ms. Burger was a full-time consultant with Library Development Solutions, a firm she founded in 1991. She is a recognized speaker, writer, and consultant on library issues such as staff development, planning and evaluation, organizational development, pay equity, and the future challenges facing libraries. Earlier, she worked at the New Jersey State Library and the Connecticut State Library in the areas of planning and library development. She started her career at the Bridgeport (CT) Public Library. Ms. Burger has served as president of the Connecticut Library Association (1982-83), president of the New Jersey Library Association (2001-2002), president of ALA’s Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies, and is an ALA councilor. In April 2005, Ms. Burger was voted in as president-elect of the American Library Association (ALA).

Clarke Bruno

Clarke Bruno is Senior Vice President for Abaric Transmission, a power transmission company.  Mr. Bruno is a lawyer and has acted as Special Advisor for Governor John Corzine and as an advisor for the Bloomberg administration in New York City. He was in private practice for almost 10 years before entering the public sector. Prior to attending law school, Bruno directed an economic development agency in East Harlem and was a Thomas J. Watson fellow in Ghana and Brazil.

Peter Dougherty

Mr. Dougherty has been Director of Princeton University Press since 2005 and has over 33 years of experience in the publishing industry including various positions at PUP. Prior to joining PUP Mr. Dougherty several publishing houses including: Harcourt Brace Jovanich, McGraw-Hill, S.t Martin’s Press and The Free Press. He is a member of the American Economic Association and is active in the American Association of University Presses.

Sherri Garber

Sherri is currently First Vice President of the library’s Friends Council where she has primarily been involved in the library’s used book sale and annual benefit.  Locally, she has held various leadership positions in the Parents Association at Princeton Day School and has worked with the Literacy Volunteers of Mercer County.  She has also served on the Board of Managers and led the curriculum team of a strategic planning initiative for Hong Kong International School.  Before that, she was the Director of Information Systems for the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York.  Sherri holds an undergraduate degree in geology from Rutgers College and completed post-graduate work at Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management.

Colleen Goggins

Colleen Goggins has recently retired from Johnson & Johnson after nearly 30 years with the company.  Colleen has been a supporter of the library and other non-profit organizations in Princeton.

Colleen joined Johnson & Johnson in 1981, working in various assignments of increasing responsibility.  She became President of Johnson & Johnson Canada in 1992; President, Personal Products Company, U.S. in 1994; and President, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies Inc. in 1995.  She was promoted to Company Group Chairman in 1998.  Colleen became a member of the Executive Committee in June 2001.

Audrey Gould

Audrey has been a member of the Foundation’s Investment Committee and has an investment management career spanning 30 years. She has received numerous awards for her accomplishments as a financial advisor as well as for her involvement in the local community.  Audrey attended the University of Pennsylvania and did post-graduate work at the University of Iowa School for Special Services. Audrey is a recipient of the national YWCA Tribute to Women in Industry (TWIN) award. The TWIN program is a celebration of outstanding women who have made significant contributions to their professions and communities.
She served on the board of directors of the Children's Home Society, the Girl Scouts of America of Delaware Valley, the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, the Board of American Repertory Ballet, the Board of International Schools and the Princeton Community Housing Board. She is presently on the Board of Governors at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the Child Health Institute of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Matthew Henderson

Mr. Henderson graduated from Hamilton College with a BA in American History and earned an MBA from the University of North Caroling at Chapel Hill. Matt has worked on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange for Bear Stearns and a product marketer for Johnson & Johnson. He is currently a partner with Henderson Sotheby’s International Realty and resides in Princeton with his wife Jennifer. Matt is an active participant in the local community and has helped numerous organizations including Princeton Day School, Hands Together and the YWCA Princeton.

Stanley Katz

Stan Katz is chair of the Library’s Advisory Council on the Humanities, the group which will provide guidance library staff involved with the planning and execution of free public humanities based programming. Stan is President Emeritus of the American Council of Learned Societies, the national humanities organization in the United States. Mr. Katz graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1955 with a major in English History and Literature. He was trained in British and American history at Harvard (PhD, 1961), where he also attended Law School in 1969-70. Katz is a member of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, the American Antiquarian Society, the American Philosophical Society; a Fellow of the American Society for Legal History, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Society of American Historians; and a Corresponding Member of the Massachusetts Historical Society. He received the annual Fellows Award from Phi Beta Kappa in 2010 and the National Humanities Medal (awarded by Pres. Obama) in 2011. He has honorary degrees from several universities.

Robert Kisilywicz

Robert Kisilywicz leads the Finance organization at SES WORLD SKIES. In this role, he is responsible for financial planning, reporting, tax, process management and risk management activities, in close cooperation with other SES group entities. He also supports investor relations activities for the SES group in the U.S. on behalf of SES WORLD SKIES and serves on the board of directors for SES’s Canadian affiliate Ciel. He joined the SES group in 2001, having previously served as corporate controller of GE Americom where he was instrumental in planning and implementing the merger and integration with SES. From 2002 to 2008 he served as Chief Financial Officer of SES Americom where he oversaw development of seven new expansion satellite programs.

Prior to joining the SES group, Rob spent seven years with KPMG in their auditing and M&A practices.

Rob holds an undergraduate degree in Accounting from the University of Rhode Island and a Masters of Business Administration from Columbia University in New York. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant and is active in a number of professional organizations.

 

Susan M. Levy

Ms. Levy dedicates most of her time to the Garden Club of America (GCA), in the recent past as a national chairman for the GCA Bulletin, a bi-monthly in-house periodical, and subsequently as a GCA director sitting on the executive committee. She is currently the GCA national chairman for public relations. Ms. Levy also serves on the board of S.A.V.E., a small animal shelter. A 25 year resident of Princeton, Ms. Levy is past president the Board of the Association of the North Princeton Developmental Center and a prior member of the Intergovernmental Alcohol and Drug Commission (now PADA). She is a former docent and trustee of the Drumthwacket Foundation. She was actively involved with the Princeton Day School Parents Association, Trinity Counseling’s Bastille Day Ball, and the Board of the Friends of the Princeton University Art Museum. Beyond this community, Ms. Levy served on the advisory council of the Alumni Programs Council, advising independent schools nationwide on alumni development. She was president of the Alumni Association of the Shipley School (Bryn Mawr, PA), and later a trustee of the school. As a volunteer for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, she chaired the preview dinner for the Philadelphia Flower Show. She is a Master Gardener of Mercer County (class of 1994), and a member and past president of the Stony Brook Garden Club where she remains active today.

M. Katherine McGavern

Ms. McGavern is the current President of the Board of Trustees of the Princeton Public Library. She served previously as Treasurer of the board. Prior to joining the Library board, she served as a trustee, Board President and Co-Chair of a successful $3 million Endowment Campaign for the YWCA Princeton. She served eight years as a member of the YMCA/YWCA Joint Board of Trustees, and in 2004, Ms. McGavern was the recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Service. She is currently completing certification in ADHD Coaching and is a board member and co-founder of CHADD Mercer County (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder).

Ruth Miller

Ms. Miller grew up in New Zealand and worked in public relations and copywriting in the United Kingdom and Canada. She spent 28 years at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, retiring in 2001 as assistant dean for public affairs. She recently returned to the Woodrow Wilson School to direct the school’s 75th anniversary events. She serves as vice president of the board of the Center for Jewish Life at Princeton University, and is a member of the National Council of the American Jewish Committee.

Allen Porter

Allen Porter is an attorney with the law firm Miller, Porter, Muller and Gagnor, P.C. and specializes in estate planning, estate administration and land use law. Mr. Porter has been an attorney for the Regional Planning Board of Princeton since 1975. Currently, Mr. Porter is counsel for the Princeton Area Community Foundation, having served previously as Treasurer and Board Member. Mr. Porter is also a Board Member of the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Princeton, the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Mercer County and the Friends of the Princeton Public Library.
