Challenge Grants

The Foundation has secured two challenge grants which have accelerated the rate of growth of our endowment and spurred giving within the community.

National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant

Princeton Public Library Foundation is honored to have been awarded a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. When fully funded, this $1,850,000 endowment will enable us to establish a Humanities Fellowship, focused on increasing and improving humanities programming at the library. Income from this endowment will be used to:

  • Develop and sustain free humanities programming at the library
  • Build relationships with community partners
  • Enhance the humanities collection at the library
  • Use technology to increase the community’s access to humanities collections and programming
  • Advertise, manage and evaluate programs
  • Share our experiences and knowledge with other libraries.

Under the terms of the challenge, the National Endowment for the Humanities will advance $1 for every $3 the Foundation is able to raise, to a maximum of $500,000. The Foundation is charged with raising $1,500,000 by 2012. As of 2011, we have completed this challenge by raising the required amount in gifts and pledges.

Robert Wood Johnson 1962 Charitable Trust

In 2006 the Foundation was award a $1,000,000 challenge grant from the Robert Wood Johnson 1962 Charitable Trust. This generous challenge matches every dollar raised by the Foundation on a 1:1 basis, meaning that your gift will double in value the very first day it is invested.

As of 2010, the Foundation is happy to report that this challenge has been fully met.
